Here's a genre trope I would not mind having purged from the internet: Castiel being a robot. I mean, unless he's legitimately a robot, which as far as AUs go I haven't seen that yet but I would probably read in a heartbeat.* Dude's thousands of years old, but he is neither a baby lamb nor is he a moron. He uses words like "insouciant" when he's stoned. Which is not even touching on the "Castiel is asexual and therefore is incapable of romantic feelings" school of aggravation, which is about equal to the argument of "X is a homosexual and therefore is excessively flamboyant" in its utter lunacy.

* Though I could have sworn I did read a story in which Sam was Luke, Dean was Han, Bobby was Chewbacca, and Castiel was C-3PO. Or maybe I'm amalgamating a metaphor I read in a fic with a loose piece of fanart? Though there's a proper time and place for a Falcon versus Impala debate. That time and place is not here.

Thank you! I wanted to play with watercolors and I needed a Cas desktop. Two tastes that taste great together!

There's a very good reason that I spend a disproportionate amount of time reading genfic with serial hugging. Or hug pollen. Or Castiel becoming a hug terrorist (no one is safe!) I need to get my fix somehow, after all.

And you're absolutely right about the genre trope. Castiel hasn't been acting like a robot, five-year-old or The University Grammar Of English in a very long time. But I guess it's easier to write him like that; when in doubt, "I do not understand". :/

I totally support people writing the stories that they are inspired to write, because hey, self expression is really good! But yeah Castiel is not emotionless, he's not stupid, and he's a hell of a lot older than most of the cast.

Personal tl;dr, but as a person living in a foreign place where barely anyone speaks my native language, I relate to Castiel much more as a cultural foreigner than someone who is mostly unable to understand things. Not having seen Fatal Attraction doesn't make you dumb or naive. But that's my personal little rant, and if people feel called to write him in those ways I hope they do! ...I just won't be as interested in reading it.
